World Health Day Dates 7th April, 2010 Calandar

  • World Health Day is celebrated on 7 April every year to mark the founding of World Health Organization (WHO). Each year, WHO selects a key global health problem and organises international, regional and local events on the day and throughout the year to highlight the selected issue.

    Although urbanisation allows more accessible health services, it also creates health hazards. In poor parts of the cities, health problems include inadequate water supply and sanitation, limited or no waste disposal and poor air quality, as well as crowded living conditions and general poverty. In such urban areas the air, land and water are often contaminated, spreading disease. In cities in the more affluent parts of the world, health hazards resulting from urbanisation are mainly connected to air pollution, as well as crime, traffic and lifestyle.

    World Health Day 2010 therefore focuses on urbanisation and health. The theme has been selected in recognition of the effect urbanisation has, on our collective health globally in addition to its effect, on our individual health.

    With the campaign “1000 cities, 1000 lives’, events are to be organised worldwide during the week of 7 - 11 April 2010. The global goals of the campaign are:

    • 1000 cities: to open up public spaces to health, whether it be activities in parks, town hall meetings, clean-up campaigns, or closing off portions of streets to motorised vehicles;
    • 1000 lives: to collect 1000 stories of urban health champions who have taken action and had a significant impact on health in their cities.
