Mere desh ki dharti sona ugle ugle heere moti
Top priority task before India in 1950s was building roads, bridges, and dams. In 1960s, the nation realised that becoming self sufficient in food stuffs was even more important. And thus came the Lal Bahadur Shastri’s slogan -”Jai Jawan Jai Kisan” (Hail the soldier, hail the farmer).
Manoj Kumar’s “Upkaar” (1967) was inspired from the “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan” slogan. And its song “mere desh ki dharti sona ugle ugle heere moti” talks of the fields of the nation that grow the foodstuff to feed the nation. Considering that the nation did not produce enough to feed its citizens, the foodgrains produced by its fields were actually worth their wait in gold.
All the inputs given in 1950s and 60s finally began to bear fruit and India became self sufficient in feeding its population through indigenous food production. It was a momentous achievement for the country that had to lead a “ship to mouth” existence in 1960s.
Condsidering the kinds of hardships that India had to face in those days on foodstuff front, the sentiments expressed by this song were bound to strike a sympathetic chord in the hearts of Indians. And so it proved. This song was a big rage. I remember this song being the favourite song of the thelawala selling icecream ( not the MNC variety, but desi style ice cream) and attracting customers by playing this song on a loudspeaker also kept in the thela (cart).
Mahendra Kapoor sang this song which was picturised on Manoj Kumar. It was with this song that Manoj Kumar hit upon the idea of playing the role of a natioanlistic young man. Even his name in his movies would henceforth be “Bharat”.
This song has become an iconic song that is a must play song on the occasions of days with national importance ( viz independence days, republic day etc).
